For years I've done more or less the same thing but with ordinary twist drill bits.
The flutes (spiral grooves) grip at the start and at the finish the drill can be untwisted.
Or at the finsh untwist only a little and continue to work the drill into the roll of paper until the smooth shank can be passed through to give a known diameter to the interior hole (useful to fit an axle when wheel making).
