Alternative to glue?

I found a supply of steri-strips while going through my old paramedic kit. I am intending to give away the bandages etc as they are so old they may as well be used for first aid training. The steri-strips, being extremely thin but strong I wonder about their use for attaching different section of model together. They would be suitable for curves too I think.

Will the adhesive eventually leach in to and stain the paper?

I would think it would work, but the test would be to see if the adhesive doesn't seep through, and if over time the adhesive breaks down, and detaches the strip from the model.

Maybe use a couple on a scale cube, and have the cube sit in the open, so the environment can affect it(not outdoors)

I have used these over decent periods for years and they are resistant to water rather than waterproof and have not leached on to skin which is quite a hostile environment.

I can just imagine the news story...

Hobbyist found deceased, next to his work table
...believed to have bled to death due to a large knife slice on his hand.
Strangely, the victim's hands were covered in what appeared to be white glue,
and a considerable number of empty bottles of tacky craft glue were found at the scene.
Apparently a few steri-strips would have sealed the wound...victim was an ex-paramedic...
but the only steri-strips found were inside a large paper airplane.

Anyone tried using Gel Medium as an adhesive? This is used by artists to give
acrylic paints texture and also as a paper/card adhesive. There are lots of available transparency and viscosity variants - it also comes in gloss and matte finishes.

No one?

Acrylic gel is interesting to use as an adhesive. It has no tackiness so getting
the position of parts right is important. It doesn't run everywhere like CA and dries fairly quickly making a strong bond. It can be used on end gluing but it seems to require accurate fitting of parts. An image of a small test piece is attached.

Hello Mike,

I think the steri-strips would work reasonably well, as they are basically a variant of ye old sticky-tape / cellophane tape. Which brings us neatly on the next topic consideration....

Gluing together a model does require part to part adhesion of some sort, nothing new there. For the kind of high performance paper flying models I build its critical to wing and fuselage performance and strength.

Its essentially an engineering problem, as well as one of both physics and chemistry - how to impart strength to a composite structure.Again nothing we are not all aware of.

Its a total surprise to me , even now, that junior and high school students interested in these topics are not encouraged to build paper models more, as its a first-hand way of learning these concepts.

My contribution is this, then - its of course possible to build with steri strips. Or self adhesive tape (I've done it myself in the process of developing some of the first origami swing wing model aeroplanes back when I was 10 in the 1980's), or any number of possible glues out there (with the exceptions of cyano, which can set the paper on fire, and Pritt school glue, which doesn't). Its even concievable to assemble with pins, tacks, wire, and many other forms of adhesive substances which are not a chemical bond....

Sorry to be so very pedantic, and its always good to get one's mind stretched in the process :-)

Have used acrylic gel in doing collage artwork, never thought about it as a model adhesive.
