Wingtips

I'm sure there must be an article somewhere but I just can't find it.
How do you make such nice rounded wingtips instead of the flat ill fitting dustbin fodder that I make ?

I burnish the inner surface of the wig tips and the tips of the tail surfaces to get a slightly rounded form.

Thanks for finding the images Don. I've often wondered about this too. I'd suspected that one needed to build-up structure just inside and setback a few mm. Or does that take too much sculpting where burnishing is more forgiving?

It depends a lot on the designers approach to wing tips.
Marek, Nobi...and myself, all have a simple less complicated approach.
But it doesn't provide the best shaped or best looking wing tips.

Having said that, take a look at some real aircraft and you'll find some pretty messy wing ends!

Inside tabbed joiners can sometimes help, but sometimes a clean edge gluing works best.
It also comes down to how well the two surfaces mate.
Have they been cut correctly? Do the shapes properly match.

With my P47 tutorial, I pushed this approach of burnishing a curled edge.
And then butt joining/edge gluing the two surfaces together.
It worked well.

I did the same thing for the tail Rudder

also before burnishing lightly sand/bevel the squarish edges of the paper . also preglue the area with a thinned pva glue, both sides, let it dry. then final glue the edges together. use this thinned and final glue sparingly. if it gets further down the wing you run the risk of gluing more than the tips and get that flat wing effect you are trying to avoid.

Dave,

I can't see the images that you posted (however I do have a copy of your P-47 tutorial).

Thanks,
Gary

I can see 'em fine and dandy Dave. If anything they are showing much bigger than usual. What host are you using? I'm still looking for a suitable replacement for P.Bucket. I don't doubt that the PM Gallery method will run out of space sooner or later, but it's serving me adequately for now.
