book on paper model making?

So I was chatting with some individuals a couple of weeks ago and they asked me to write down my through process when I'm building or designing a paper model and asked a few more questions. I made some flippant comment along the lines of "I might as well just write a book." And they replied back with, "Yes, do that instead."

I mentioned this over in the narcissus design thread.

So I've started to write up a bunch of the techniques I use for making and designing models. I want the first section to be fore people who are new to the hobby... what are the basics you need to make something look nice. The second section will be more advanced building techniques and the last section will be design considerations and the thought process that goes into it.

I have a sizable outline and 24 pages written so far. Are there any topics you think should be included that I don't have on my list so far?

Here is the link to the outline.

And I'm going to distribute the book for free like the model's I've designed.

Maybe something about making domes like at the nose of some aircraft, the bow of some submarines, or the front of some missles by using open petals or strips or spirals. Some building have dome shapes like those on old churches and such; or on nuclear power plant containment buildings.

Good one to add.

Your outline is ambitious and I sense that it will be a labour of love. I wish you every success in your endeavour. And I'd love to see a copy when it's done.

I like the outline of the book. It looks like you are off to a very good start. I think that it will be very helpful. If I may suggest, have a glossary section that gives brief definitions of different terms that are commonly used in model (especially paper model) building.
I am looking forward to seeing how it will turn out.

Great project

This is both ambitious and worth while!

This could be really great!

I might suggest something though. I think there's a small stage missing between "intro" and "building" (which some might consider the most fun.) Research!

I guess it all depends on how crazy one wants to get with all this, but here goes. The following is only a suggestion -- this is your book.

Research:
  • has anyone already built a paper model of it?
    • a model exists, but what will your version contribute?
      • level of detail (who is this model for?)
      • drawn detail vs physical detail
      • coloration and shading
  • identify different versions of your subject
    • company's first prototype
    • first released version
    • later revisions
    • which one should you build?
  • images
    • sources (manufacturer, client company, social media accounts)
    • undistorting images
    • color correction (white balance)
    • plan views (front, side, top, etc.)
    • small details
  • videos
    • youtube, vimeo, etc. (both official and fan accounts)
    • still frame capture
    • undistorting still frames
  • company sell sheets and other materials (pdf)
    • plan views
    • scale information
    • logos
  • colors
    • color correction (white balance)
    • color systems for designers (Pantone, RAL, Federal Standard, etc.)
  • textures
  • knowing when to stop your research!

I might also suggest the addition of "hair clips" to the "Advanced tools" category.

There's also the matter of licensing for the paper model -- like Creative Commons.

Anyway, you're off to a good start!

Cheers!

I think this would be of great help to all paper model builders, you can never know too much, a section on wheels....always a problem.
