Magnetic Connection points

Good day all. I'm busily working on my ISS model and have elected to use the experience of other modelers and incorporating small magnets at certain connection points such as robotic arm grapples and cargo vessels. I was originally going to add magnets on both sides, but the directional polarity of my neodymium magnets is pretty strong and not very forgiving for my poor planning.

I'm hopeful that if I mount one side with the magnet and the other with a steel washer or nut, I can have some more flexibility while keeping the strength of the bond. The question I pose is; Washer or stack of washers or Nut? Does more metal create a stronger bond, or at a certain point does the weight negate the strength.

Anyone, use magnets and washers on aviation ordinance, or maybe vehicle accessories etc?

I haven't tried using magnets myself but it's something I'd definitely consider when it comes to removable ordinance etc.

I'd suggest maybe a bit of trial and error, just set up a couple of tests with magnets and different amounts of washers on some spare card so you can see how strong the bond is and you can adjust it to suit the weight of the parts you're trying to connect.
