Model storage

A highly organized member of this forum must have the ultimate
method for safely storing completed models.

In my garage and elsewhere are stacks of different sized cardboard boxes
containing my completed models not yet donated. My wife says she will have a truck back up, load and take them away when I assume room temperature.

I am thinking of replacing the unsightly cardboard boxes using clear plastic storage boxes with lids.

Is there a better method out there?

BP

If they're stacked in a visible place, you could always buy some decorative boxes from the dollar shop. They're usually pretty cheap and comes in various colours / patterns.

Some of my collectables are in black boxes I bought from Officeworks. My wife prefers those over random brown boxes especially since they are in the lounge.

I think large clear plastic boxes are the way to go, especially if you are storing in a garage. Protects the models and you can see what in there. And if you cut a large piece of poster board and lay it in the bottom, its easy to fabricate some formers out of foam core to keep the models from sliding around during transport by car.

Even though you can see inside, I find it best to stick a label on each end with broad definition of the contents.

Oh, and write the name of the model in the space it occupies. I owe this obvious tip to Rose Glessner (Mrs. DrLaser), who used to enjoy watching me try to figure out how to put the models back in the boxes until at one IPMC she saw me start to unload and said, "Don, stop! As you take out each model, write the name on the poster board." Flash of enlightment ensured.

It would probably help if you could find some sort of desiccant to put into each box. Something like those silica gel packets you find in some packages that you are supposed to throw away and not eat.
Too bad about that. I always wants me some silica gel snacks to go with my moonshine.

Doug - Brilliant! Seems obvious now that you have said it, but never occurred to me.

That's exactly the kind of practical insight we expect from a steely eyed missile-man!

I'm sorry, but I fail to understand this "storing" of built models?

Do you not wish to look at them? Do you not like them?
Then why keep them?

Or, are you saving them to give away?...then why not give them away now?
Why wait?

And...to someone who wants them.
I hate to say it, but the people who inherit this stuff, usually don't want it, and it gets trashed anyway!

Storage is a risky thing, especially for a paper model.
Humidity, dampness and moisture are commonplace and will eventually damage or destroy the models.
So why risk it and wait for that to happen?
Then, theres crushing damage...even the best containers get damaged in storage.
And lets not forget about environmental (storm) damage and fire.

I say, if you don't have room to display your models and cannot enjoy them now, then get rid of them.
Gift them to friends or family, donation to museum, hobby store, etc, or trash them and make room for more!

Someone had to say it. lol

All paper models will not last for over a decade.
Just take pictures of all your models and keep the pictures only.
That's the surest way to see them at their best conditions.
Ya know, it hurts to see a wing broken or a landing gear strut gone!

Although I like to look at them, I store them because I don't have an adequate space to display them and want to keep them for display at events with other paper modelers.

I realize the transitoriness of paper models, but want them to last long enough for a few displays. As attendees at the IPMC can attest, I have brought out many of the same models for years -- indeed, in spite of the inevitable attrition, I have some dating from the 90s and two or three from the 70s.

Plastic boxes stave off damage and keep them readily accessible. And when it is time for a paper modeling event, it is easy to pack the boxes in a car and transport them.

The exhibit stuff is obviously the exception.
As is the for sale or barter stuff.

I have plastic storage totes full of toys, Hot Wheels, collectibles, etc that I vend.
Obviously this is not my personal collection that I want to look at.

I was only addressing the personal collection.

Recently I threw out a dozen or so paper models from my displayed collection to make room for new ones.
Mainly stuff that I wasn't that impressed with, and things I didn't have room for any more.
But I see no point in having stuff hidden away from view.
If it doesn't earn a place on a shelf somewhere, then I might as well toss it.
