Drawing Flat Struts From 3View Drawings

Is there a magic (simple) method to produce "flat" struts from 3 view drawings? For example, landing gear struts on a WWI biplane where the struts are angled both out and back.

Sorry if this subject has been discusses before -- I couldn't get search results since I don't know what the process is called.

Probably best solved by a 13 yr old geometry student....


The drawing is hard to read. Suggest drawing the front view and striking an arc from the top to the end of the strut, drawing to a perpendicular. This would be the length of the strut if not another angle. So....using the new length, draw an arc for the second angle to a perpendicular. That result should be the length of the strut with the combined angles.


PS I think.....I didn't try it!

Hello Gene,


in my opinion you get the true length of the strut with the following formular (have a look to attachement): real length = square_root from ( a^2 (a = blue) + b^2 (b = violet) + c^2 (c = red)).
