Of course the true craftsman would make his own tools from mild steel blanks, and then harden them, rather than purchase them ready made

That "push drill" at the bottom of the page is a nice tool. Since the tooltip twists as you push the handle down, it does not depend on a strong hit to cut - no need of wood blocks or mallets - just steady force which does not even harm a cutting mat.
