Vintage Model Page Clean Up

Most of the pages on the vintage models from Familie-Journal or Imagerie D'Epinal have a strong brown color cast. Here is an example of what a page looks like before and after I clean it up. The before was downloaded using the original size option.



I trim the page then remove the color cast using manual color correction. I then adjust the color balance by moving the color toward the warmer or cooler end of the spectrum. After that I adjust the color saturation and contrast. I play with the adjustments until things look OK to me.

I do use the eraser tool on the background to remove some discoloration even though the cleaned up page above shows some. I reduced the size of the picture that is posted so it would not display humongously and it introduced some discoloration. The actual finished page looks better.

Which program do you use? I use Gimp, which has been very useful for cleaning these up. Using the Color Tools and Filters becomes very intuitive

On some of my earlier clean-ups, I found that I would clean things up too much. I tend to leave some of the 'character' now more than I used to, fading it out rather than erasing, except in the background, where white should be white

I use Paint Shop Pro and/or PhotoShop. Mainly Paint Shop Pro.

Yeah, I try to make the background white while leaving some of the grunge on the individual parts.

In a way, I wish I hadn't gotten as efficient at cleaning these. It used to take up an enjoyable evening working on one or two of these, but now that it takes 30 minutes, it is less enjoyable

I use Paint Shop Pro as well.

I usually get the background white by using "Colour Replace".

I use do that with old Maly kits if scan was done well enough. I can't recall how I did that in PS4,it was long time ago.

It would be nice to see how others handle the various situations that show up.

I always have to check to make sure one of my steps does not erase some of the details on the model parts or alter them too much.
