legal sized card stock discontinued?
 

Does anyone know if we are now SOL for legal sized cardstock?

When I went shopping for legal sized card stock at 65 pound weight, I found that Staples, Office Max, and Office Depot don't have it and can't get it. I was told by a manager at Staples that Waukesha, the paper manufacturer, was recently bought out, and a lot of paper products are thus disappearing.

The 11 x 17 size is still available, but using it trimmed down certainly raises the cost of printing. At Hobby Lobby in the art section I found 9 x 12 inch 'Tagboard' at $9 for a 100 sheet pack. Paper weight appears to be the 100lb variety. I can trim width to fit the ink jet printer and print A4 sized images.

An old trick that I use is to cut a strip of cardstock and tape it to the letter-size cardstock to increase the length. It would need to be taped to either the top or bottom depending on where the parts are placed on the page, meaning that you would tape the strip on whichever end the whitespace is greater. Also minimize your margin settings on the printer. It is very rare when this technique doesn't work.

Check out the medium weight 12 x 9 tagboard. It is around the same as 65lb cover/97lb index cardstock or 177gsm. $5.19/pack.
My caliper measures it as around 0.21mm / 0.008"

The heavy weight stuff is around 93 lb cover/140 lb index or 252gsm. $6.29/pack.

There are white and manila available so make sure if you order that you pick the correct one.

That works very well when the image is an A4, but I had created a number of images at 13" high. For example, I scanned my big He-177 kit by Fly Model, stitched the pages back together in the graphics editor I use, fixed the camo color problems, and then copied & pasted model parts to blank 8.5x14 sheets. Laser printers often add a default top margin, so adding paper to the bottom is best. Doesn't matter for an inkjet. Of course, be careful which side you add the tape to.... guess how I know about that!

Yep, I was referring to A4. I'd be curious how well tagboard holds ink when creasing, or if it will cause the ink to flake off.

Here is an online source for 8.5 x 14 cardstock. Don't know how it is to do business with that particular vendor.

Did some cipherin' and figured an order of 2 packs with lowest shipping would be equivalent to $9.67 per 100 sheets fer me. Your pricing will differ depending on location and shipping method chosen.

If you live close to any medium and up sized city, there should be at least one paper supply house that usually will have a walk in sales counter. Check under both paper and printing/commercial printer headings.

Don't know about the tagboard yet but will print a sheet or two tonight and let you know how it worked out. Some of the Legal card stock I used was 'flat' and highly ink absorbent. Solution was applying a clear matt spray paint coat... before the canopy went on. Since an inkjet printout is prone to water and moisture damage, some kind of final clear cover coat is a good idea.

I have used this when I need heavy legal sized paper. I just cut it in half.
