Caveat Emptor

Caveat emptor. No way of really being able to tell without trying it out. Pure polyethylene works.

I've pick first film I've saw in cheap mini-market, and it works. Sand the back-side of colored paper, put 2 layers of film, cover with regular paper, apply some heat = done.
Either film manufacturer (and probably material) doesn't matter, either I'm lucky enough.

The material that works is Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) without any type of coating ....

I appreciate that feedback, but since my grocery store doesn't label the type of plastic (if that's the right term), and because I'm not sure what "cheap" or "ordinary" qualifies, I'll try different brands as Gil suggested. In That regard:

... Target brand seems to work fine."
and to add to that database, Glad Cling Wrap works OK, but one side definitely adheres more than the other.

Anyone else have specific brands they've tried?

Thanks, and I'm off to Target.

I tried this inexpensive ($20 at Walmart) 3M Thermal Laminator without success (using Glad Cling Wrap as well as .7mil drop cloth). The machine has a 3mil and 5mil setting, neither of which produced any sort of bond.

Other (higher priced) models may work, but definitely not this one.

Sorry, I'm little bit confused. Are you talking about the film or Laminator?
Or you are trying to use Laminator with different type of film? If so - try to use regular iron (you can steal one from your wife ) probably Laminator can't provide necessary heat or pressure.

Today I needed to laminate an unusually large part, so I took the opportunity to try Necroscope's technique. The part was a large rectangle about 80% the size of a sheet of paper.

After a couple successful test runs on small pieces of scrap card, I attempted the full-size part. I used one layer of common household plastic "cling wrap" between two sheets of 220gsm heavy card. I placed an extra sheet of paper on top and bottom for protection while ironing, and did the ironing on a wooden cutting board.

The sheets of cardstock bonded together very well, but there was some significant curling of the paper. So I applied the iron again, then immediately pressed the sheets under a piece of glass while they cooled. The result was much flatter, but still a little curved. However, I was able to eliminate the curvature simply by lightly flexing the paper in the opposite direction. I was very happy with the results.

I'm adding my experience to this thread to "bump" it back to the top of the heap for the benefit of anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

Thank you again, Necroscope, for introducing this excellent technique to us!

Didn't work for me - my experiments and experiences - tried diff papers and diff plastic films - you can always peel the 2 sheets of paper apart - doesn't stay stuck - as in - Bonded / Stuck Forever - fear is ..if it can be peeled apart - then - what happens in Time -after the completion of the model 2-3 years later...humidity factor - UV factor- dampness in air -????? I dont wanna go there - nor be there.

the non bonding - I think it has something to do on a molecular level /structure between the PAPER and the PLASTIC FILMS used.

guess its good ol fashion Glue & Paper for me

I don't understand the purpose of this method? Is it for frames to be cut out? Or you want to have a thick print of the parts? Or just laminate paper prints?
