Interesting article. I used table-sized light boxes as a cartographer back in the 70's and remember the uneven lighting and brightness. And the fun when the ballasts would go bad. Ah, the good old days.

The pad isn't hard to make.
It's frosted clear plexi with bright white led tape placed in the plastic rim that goes around the edges. It's the same idea as those glowing crayon signs at a restaurant, the plastic acts like a light pipe / fiber optic and transmits the light from the leds up thru the plastic sheet. To get the even glow on a light pad small groves are cut into the back side of the plexi sheet. These groves shine when the leds are on acting like long tube light bulbs. I've built a couple of these to act as computer monitors or tv screens for a theater group I worked with. |
