micro disc sander

hello all,

I finally put together the sanding device I had in mind. works really well so far.

bought the motor bracket and the mounting hub from a robot parts company. the pwm controller is from ebay. the rest are bits and pieces I already had.

I have been experimenting with lego bricks for a while, trying them out as jigs to hold and align parts for gluing. works pretty well as diy miter.

I would ideally make the 'table' and 'miter' from metal but I don't have a mill-yet

the lego stud spacing worked out well for the dimensions of the motor and disc. I was able to get the disc really close to the 'table'. the sanding 'face' is normal sand paper attached to the hub with 3m atg 'snot' tape.

finished item. 'squaring' really good for what I am doing though probably not by machinists standards.

I couldn't do this just by hand.

a finished part. by the way, the stock is paper/card hardened with ca.

That's a pretty cool micro-sander you have made there Amit. Have you considered making plans available to the paper modeling community? Some of us can't assemble a box without plans and written instructions.

thanks guys!

@Elliott: I didn't have a plan, just threw parts together.
when I get home tonight I will post a list and describe the build a little bit more.

@john: I did look for metal angles but didn't find anything suitable, small enough for my purpose and with perforations so that they can be easily screwed in. do you know of a source in the usa where I could find such items?

this is basically the first 'prototype'. I would like to use all metal parts in the future. also I am looking into making/putting together a micro sized miter gauge. wish more and more that I had a mill

I get the ones I use from Home Depot.......... I use them in PC case models and such.........they usually have the size I need although I might have to purchase 4' sections

@zakopious: thanks for the link. though the one made with a dremel looks a little too flimsy for working on metal, I noticed that there were links to more 'solid' diy mills. those designs look very interesting.

@john: thanks for the lead. I will check out home depot over the weekend.
