micro disc sander
hello all,
I finally put together the sanding device I had in mind. works really well so far. bought the motor bracket and the mounting hub from a robot parts company. the pwm controller is from ebay. the rest are bits and pieces I already had. Attachment: P1010977.jpg [ 124.86 KiB | Not viewed yet ] I have been experimenting with lego bricks for a while, trying them out as jigs to hold and align parts for gluing. works pretty well as diy miter. Attachment: P1010991.jpg [ 100.02 KiB | Not viewed yet ] I would ideally make the 'table' and 'miter' from metal but I don't have a mill-yet Attachment: P1010995.jpg [ 87.2 KiB | Not viewed yet ] the lego stud spacing worked out well for the dimensions of the motor and disc. I was able to get the disc really close to the 'table'. the sanding 'face' is normal sand paper attached to the hub with 3m atg 'snot' tape. Attachment: P1010996.jpg [ 83.57 KiB | Not viewed yet ] finished item. 'squaring' really good for what I am doing though probably not by machinists standards. Attachment: P1010979.jpg [ 67.65 KiB | Not viewed yet ] I couldn't do this just by hand. Attachment: P1010988.jpg [ 59.09 KiB | Not viewed yet ] a finished part. by the way, the stock is paper/card hardened with ca. Attachment: P1010990.jpg [ 64.93 KiB | Not viewed yet ] thanks amit |

That's a pretty cool micro-sander you have made there Amit. Have you considered making plans available to the paper modeling community? Some of us can't assemble a box without plans and written instructions.

thanks guys!
@Elliott: I didn't have a plan, just threw parts together. when I get home tonight I will post a list and describe the build a little bit more. @john: I did look for metal angles but didn't find anything suitable, small enough for my purpose and with perforations so that they can be easily screwed in. do you know of a source in the usa where I could find such items? this is basically the first 'prototype'. I would like to use all metal parts in the future. also I am looking into making/putting together a micro sized miter gauge. wish more and more that I had a mill |

I get the ones I use from Home Depot.......... I use them in PC case models and such.........they usually have the size I need although I might have to purchase 4' sections

@zakopious: thanks for the link. though the one made with a dremel looks a little too flimsy for working on metal, I noticed that there were links to more 'solid' diy mills. those designs look very interesting.
@john: thanks for the lead. I will check out home depot over the weekend. |
