How about lollypop sticks or Qtip stems. It's been a while, but I think they are made from rolled paper, or at least they used to be.

Nice and straight ... uniform size too!

I'm new to paper and card stock modelling, so please forgive me if this is cheating.

Not cheating at all. Any number of members here have used both lollipop sticks and/or QTip stems. You can even reduce their diameter by slitting them lengthwise and removing the paper layer by layer until you reach the desired diameter.
