Varnish...?

Hi,

Last time I was looking for something that helps me to protect paper and makes paper a little bit harder.

I was looking for a varnish. Matt varnish spray for wood that I used in my country. I coulden't find such varnish here in Thailand. Only Laquer. But I think it isn't the best thing to impregnate paper.
Till today. In one shop for artists I found something like that:
Varnish...?-20160910_193559.jpg

I'd like to ask. Have you ever tryed such varnish?
If so is it ok? Maybe you use something smilar. I'd like to know your opinion

Best Regards

Lukas

Hi Lukas,
I think you have the right stuff. I'm using a similar varnish, it's a Dutch brand called Talens. Acrylic based matt varnish. I always spray a thin coat on each sheet before starting the work, if required apply some with a brush during the build and sometimes a thin spray after the build. It sort of masks any glue stains. Makes the paper a bit stronger and stiffer when working with it and there is hardly any negative effect on the glue bonding. Use it with care in a well ventilated room! And most of all try it out on a finished model or something that has turned into a failure....

It dries relatively quick but allow the first layer to dry thoroughly, a few hours. Don't spray too thick to avoid dripping. Plan the work!

Good luck,
Erik

Indeed the best place to buy it is in an artist's shop, they can also give you good advice. I buy mine always in such a shop.
