Tips for Clamping and Gluing
Hi,
I found these little wooden clothes pins are great for clamping glued pieces together. The wood is soft enough, it does not mar the surface, and you can get a bag of about 20 for under 2 USD at Wal Mart. They also stock an even smaller size. The clamp end can be easily whittled down to a smaller size for tight spaces. I also get tired of waiting for glue to travel down to the spout when I am assembling. Especially the thicker varieties, when the glue gets low in the bottle. To speed things up, I bought a .66 oz bottle, and I store it on it's side while I am gluing. It is easier to control because of the size and the glue reaches the spout so much faster! I then refill it from the 8 oz bottle. I hope someone finds this useful.

Yes, those mini clothes pins are helpful as clamps. You can modify them to work a little better.
Here is a picture of normal size and mini clothe spins modified.

Aleens now has an upside down bottle. Basically it is a little flat cup that has a stopper in it that fits the Aleens bottle. They are a little pricey (like twice the normal price) but if you get one you can use it on other bottles. You just need to clean the lid occasionally.

I do about three quarters of the gluing from the bottle, and maybe a quarter just putting some glue on a scrap of paper and using a little sculpting tool I have had for ages to get into really tight spots, or when I just need a tiny dot of glue somewhere

I likewise use Aleene,s and to make sure I do not have to wait for the glue to get to the tip I store it upside down with the tip cover on in a old pickle jar.
Pull it out, take the cover off and the glue is always there.

I came up with a similar solution for those who don't eat pickles. I saved the cardboard core from a roll of packing tape, glued it to a 4"x4" piece of 2mm scrap cardboard. It holds the Aleene's bottle upside down and it doesn't tip over.

Neat! I tend to use hemostats, but I've only got ones with the knurled type grippy teeth and it imparts the texture.... of course, we all knew that though.
I'll have to get a bag of those clips! |
