Old to Papercraft but new to design

Hey Everyone,

Been doing papercraft models ever since my dad introduced me to them as a kid. Noticed on here the star trek community has more models than the star wars community so i'd figure why not start learning some model designing. I don't have a problem with building, ideas, or graphic design however I am missing software. Was wondering what software you would recommend and perhaps give some thoughts on what would work for a new blood like myself. If there's a tiered difficulty to certain program let me know about the progression and which order to tackle them with.

Was thinking this ship from the old dark forces two games might be a good to start my training with. Let me know!
