Or if you're using Inkscape you can add a layer over the image and then put white filled shapes over the parts of the image you do not want to print.

Primitive solution, but it works.

Thanks for all the info lads, really helpful. I ended up using pdf-xchange as I've found adobe to be a bit troublesome in the past.
