Wood Dowel For Scoring
A little while back there was a discussion on how after years of scoring lines on paper models the metal straight edge is no longer straight and has a slight curve to it.
I was looking at some hardwood dowels I had lying around and decided to run one through a pencil sharpener to see if it would work as a tool for scoring. It does in fact work. A 1/4 inch or approximately 6mm diameter dowel was used. You can vary the sharpness to get as fine a point as you want. You must be careful if it is too sharp because it would then be more likely to puncture the page you are scoring. Since the metal straight edge is harder than the hardwood dowel there should be no wearing away of the straight edge edge(). Just tune it up with another trip through the pencil sharpener when needed.

My metal blade scoring tool works well, but this still sounds like a great idea.
I have so many wooden dowels of varying diameters...and I have an electric pencil sharpener. I will give this a try. A while back I bought some short knitting Needles (of various sizes) to try as scoring tools. They appear to be made from aluminium...painted or colour coated in some way. And they appear to have blunt pointed ends. But I found the points to be a little too sharp and it was easy to score too deeply. The softer wood point sounds like a better option.

I've used them for years when I want a less sharp or wider scoring rather than that achieved with a dull knife blade. You can create your own or purchase a clay sculpting kit.

We use these wood dowels (not sharpened too much) and slightly blunt knitting needles at make and take tables to avoid the chance of injury and liability, but we still keep a sharp(!) eye on the littlies as they brandish these instruments.

How about spent ballpoint pen? I have recently used it, worked well.

I used to use an old .05 mechanical pencil that had stopped working, which worked well. Now I use a yarn needle that is stuck in a dowel for a handle. Yarn needles have dull points.
