I guess I should have said small pieces. I use it for such things as chimney tubes, curving fenders on 1:100 antique autos, small gun barrels, wheel spokes, spoke wheel banding, flowing flags, etc.

Yep, I have now seen a few listed with 1/2mm as a size. It just seems a bit small for a diameter. Probably a error in the listing and label. Whatever the case, those do look like a handy addition to the tool chest to go along with all of the other dowels, cylinders, and round shaped things to wrap paper around.

Thanks for the tip. You must have had a bench full of interesting tools when you repaired clocks. Many of us might already have something similar, a box of drill bits, the unfluted stems of the drills can be used as a form. A box of drills takes up more drawer space than just one mandrel.

Sorry John. Yeah, that's what I did. I have also considered making a dowel board. With a 1/2" x 2" board as a base, drill holes in popular sizes. Then glue the same size dowel in their respective holes. It's the same idea as the wire mandrel. Just in an exploded view.
