Tool for making small scale tubes, curves and bends
The tool is called a "5 STEP WIRE BENDING MANDREL". I have one that was left over from my clock and watch restoring days. The steps on the one I have are 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, and 5mm. The first step on the modern ones is 0.5mm vs 1mm. They cost more today than when I purchased mine, but if need something like this, it pays for itself in reducing frustration. They sell for about 15 USD. I checked and found several sources on Google. I added a photo here for those that have never run across one. I hope this helps at least one modeler.

You could also try a plastic drill bit holder. Just drill the holes all the way thru. It gives you many different sizes of tube. I have one that has holes from 1/2" down to 1/16" in 29 different increments. You can probably get them from Harbor Freight in Standard & Metric sizes.

You can find a similar tool at Michaels in the jewelry section called a jump ring tool for about 9 dollars. Probably not as good quality but would work for most of our uses. Plus you can use their 40% off coupon and out the door for around 6 bucks including tax.

John, did you mean 1.5mm instead of 0.5mm for the modern ones?

That is part of why I questioned the size of 0.5mm. That mandrel on Amazon says 5 sizes: 1/2mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, and 5mm. 1/2mm would be a diameter that is 1/4 the diameter of the 2mm step. Looking at the picture provided of the tool does not indicate that first step as being 1/4 the diameter of the next step which would be the 2mm diameter size in the progression of diameters. All of the other step mandrels with small diameters I have seen listed on sites start at 1.5mm.
Widget Supply has a few mandrels the smallest diameter being 1.5mm. https://www.widgetsupply.com/ Search for Step Mandrel.

I only opened the one that said 1/2mm and took that to mean 0.5mm. If the others say 1.5, I stand corrected.
