I have a couple of very fine Arkansas whetstones.

Try using one and see if it works for you.

My blades are always razor sharp, and as soon as I feel them lose the edge, a couple of licks on the stone and they are back to square one.

What Kevin said.... I keep a stone on my desk and give the blade a couple passes when it starts to drag, the strop it off on an old belt. I usually change blades once a year or so.

good advice on the whetstones and belt. also check widget supply for a source of modeling stuff. they have a lot of doodads that make the hobby. they often run a special on magnifying head sets for us vision challenged modelers!

I sharpen my blades with one of these hand sharpeners. I haven't thrown a blade away since...I don't remember. Even if I chip a blade, I keep using it.

I actually remove my carpet cutting blades and sharpen with this tool. Only takes a few swipes and I'm back to cutting carpet.

X-Acto are rubbish here as well and also cost a fortune..

I use Olfa blades for general cutting (sharpening them as I go along). Blade lasts me about a year. Resharpen each model I do - take about a minute.

For intricate cutting, I have bought scalpel blades (#11), and these fit nicely in one of my Olfa knives - I have a couple as you can buy a knife with a pack of 20 blades and the price is not really different to a refill pack! I have found them cheaper in craft shops than in hobby shops.

----------------

Fizbi - those sharpeners are good - I have similar Lansky one. Never tried on the modeling blades, but will give a bash now and see......

There are several different designs and it is difficult to get small blades in there, but it is the pointy end of the blade that needs sharpening for me.

I have to agree with KevinWS Olfa blades are the way to go.
Much haigher quality than both xacto and excel. One blade will easily last 2 to 3x longer.
