I use these now:

I get good results from them. I haven't tried a whetstone yet. I'll have to do that, as I generally change blades for each new project.
I agree about x acto blades though... the tips are always pretty brittle feeling to me, they break, usually on the first couple of cuts.

I glued a piece of an old belt to a board for a strop.

Some of that black jewelers rouge helps refine the edge.

The advantage I find to sharpening the blades is they get progressively shorter and are a stiffer (don't bend as easily) which makes cutting a little easier for me.

For those who live in the US, Lowes has a knock-off of the Sili-Slick 2 stage sharpener for 4 bucks. It is well reviewed and I just might go pick one up to use with all those X-acto blades that I still have left.

I found the X-Acto "Z" blade today at my local WalMart store. About $0.50 a blade, package of 6. Will give it a try. I didn't see other brands so I can't be too choosy. Other threads in this forum report good results with the X-Acto Z-Blade

Make a leather strop and get a little Arkansas whetstone and try them as well. You will then keep the blades good for ages. Well worth the investment.

Just stroke SLOWLY on the whetstone...........
