Excel vs X-Acto blades
I bought a pack of 100 X-Acto blades in carbon steel when I got into paper modeling. I have used X-Acto for years in plastic modeling. The ones I bought were crap so I got the set of 15 in the little holder. Still crappy. Very brittle and the point would be gone in about 10 cuts.
Found some Excel blades on Amazon and what a world of difference. A pack of 100 was only a bit more than the X-Acto pack. These are stainless steel and really last a long time. Standard disclaimer about stock in the company, yada yada yada.... Excel blades

Excellent news!!!!! I agree with you, I don't understand why a reputed company founded in 1935, started to manufactured crap No. 11 blades. I also purchased some and they lasted one cut!!! Can you please give us, if the forum allows it, the full information on these blades? We will be forever grateful.

Yep, Excel blades are pretty good.
Sometimes I wonder if it is the cutting mat that is part of the problem. There are cutting mats that are used for rotary cutters like what quilters or clothes makers use. Most of those cuts are straight or more gentle curves. Those cutting mats are kind of hard so when you try to make a tighter curved cut for a paper model the tip of the blade is more likely to break. There are cutting mats that are made of a softer material that seem to be more easy on hobby knife blades. Do a search for cutting mats that are more specific to hobby knives or model builders instead of rotary cutters.

X-Acto #11 blades have been crap ever since a new corporation took over and shifted the manufacture from the USA to China. I haven't seen Excel blades in my neighborhood in quite a while. What I now use are Techni-Edge blades which I order from Amazon.
