Boat hull and frames

Hi erveryone !

Some months ago, I started modeling a boat wich is here :
Abeille 13

I use Sketchup for 3D modeling and unfolding.
But I had a big problem to build this boat. The 3D model seems ok, but the hull parts are a little bit too small to join correctly when I try to glue them on the frames.

In my opinion, the problem could be that the 3D model doesn't take into accound the paper thickness.

Is there a rule to solve this problem ? Maybe increase slightly the size of the hull parts ? And in what proportion ?

Thank you for your help !

You are correct. at least in rhino, card thickness and the actual line thickness of the bulkheads matter. you cut in the middle of the line if not on the inside.

To solve this problem you must take paper thickness into account. On this forum you can find informations on thickness vs paper weight, or you can measure paper thickness of paper you are using.

Even then there can be some imperfections because of paper behaviour when curving or bending. You need to test build your model and correct these imperfections in your unfold template.

As the others have said, the paper thickness is very important.

When I make this kind of construction I provide the inner frames with different outlines (reduced by .5mm and 1mm usually) so that depending on the used paper thickness, the builder can then cut appropriately.

That way I can leave the outer hull as designed in 3D. Just the inner frames are adjusted.
