Magnets?

People when working on a ship, they glue the ship down to a surface with rubber cement in a few spots to keep it flat. How about using magnets on a metal surface instead. Good idea? Could use wax paper under the ship. To keep glue from sticking to the metal.

Great idea. You'd just have to be careful of the magnet's strength; powerful enough to hold but not so that moving the model wouldn't encourage denting or ending.

I've been experimenting with connecting compartments on a model, permitting access without gluing, using the same idea.

Stick and tissue modelers have been using magnets and a steel building board for many years, e.g.: https://easybuiltmodels.com/b04.htm

The building "board" that Don mentions is available from Micro Mark, and possibly from your local hobby shop. See:

Pretty neat. Jim

Just in case anyone is unaware of this source ... Rare Earth magnets are cheaply available in all sorts of shapes and sizes from here ...

https://www.wish.com/search/magnets

I have hundreds of them and find them useful for many different things. The attraction strength of even the tiny ones is often unbelievable, and the larger ones can be difficult to pull apart, so please heed the warning given earlier by The DC.
