Ok. I got sent here by Google while following a line of other thought, and I realize it's an old thread, but I have a relative who works at a print shop and he explained how the weight system for paper works:
"In figuring out the weight of paper, start with the standard size (A4 or 8-1/2×11"). If the paper is listed as "20lb", then that is the approximate weight of one ream (500 sheets) of the paper. So, 65lb cardstock weighs 65 pounds per ream and so on...
Not so hard to test this theory - just drop a ream on your foot. The heavier the paper, the more damage it will do...
