After preforming, use thin paper to connect the petals.
Then: make a ball of tissuepaper, soak liberally with non-waterbased glue, with a few dry layers on one side, put into the dome, press into shape - and let dry completely. Makes a strong dome!
Sounds messy - but that depends on the amount of glue you add! Making one or two copies of the cupola to get some practice may be a good idea.
This is how I made the parts that the Tintin Rocket stands on. without this trick, they would have sagged within a few weeks...

I was brought up with using kitchen spoons of one size or another. I was also told to lick the back of the paper slightly as a bit of moisture helps the process. It does work.
