Hello,

So far, I'm cabling my 1/33 biplanes with 3/10 mm piano wire.
Once at the right length, I glue them in place with a drop of vinyl glue (white glue) which has the advantage of not becoming shiny when drying like cyanoacrylate glue.
Have you experimented any other system to make your cable bracing?

The topic of cables came up recently, and my astute wife remembered that one characteristic of fly tying thread is that it does not friz (technical term for make little fuzzy threads).


I think this approach would be more applicable to smaller scale models, though.

I use a product called EZ-Line. It's sort of an elastic thread, used originally by model railroaders for things like telephone lines. It comes in several colors and thicknesses...I use mainly the fine black...and has just enough 'stretch' to give a nice taut line without adding any real tension that could skew or damage structures. It attaches easily with CA or 'super' type glues.
Also useful for ship rigging. I used it on my USS Maine posted earlier on this forum.

The fly tying thread is a good idea. The problem is to lay it without deforming the structure and with constant tension. It is necessary to imagine a solid frame but without making it difficult to access the model. Why not but not obvious.
The use of EZ thread is perfect for some uses but I don't think it is the solution for a 1/33 biplane because it is elastic and doesn't stiffen the mounting in any way.

Thanks for the link. Warning: do not buy music wire in coil. Impossible to straighten. I buy it as a 1m straight rod in a model store.

Working on building the following: Have the aluminum base plate, drill the holes for the posts, buy some different size drive rolls for a wire feed welder, Miller wants $466 for this version.

My version will be a hand pull, not motorized like the Miller version.

I work at a welding store, lots of different types of wire available. Problem is: anything smaller that 1/16" for Tig Wire means a 10lb box as a minimum special order.

I can get some really thin Tig Stick in 36" lengths, 0.039 or 1mm possible in certain metals, but 10lbs is way too much. 0.023 mild steel available in 2lb spools of MIG wire (wire feeder).

Stainless steel, aluminum can be purchased.

Interesting if you can't get music wire rod with the smallest diameter of 3/10mm.
I also used with satisfaction bronze wire of 2/10mm in rolls for the cable bracing of the biplanes at 1/66.
