... anyway this description goes a long way in describing my page of math that I supplied
It needs to.
Your page somehow lacks mathmatical precision and seems to choose to utterly ignore established conventions for the expression of mathematical concepts.

In fact it doesn't since I can't understand how you got by incorrect logic to the right answer and I doubt many people could follow it either.

Hold on...I looked over jleslie's sheet and followed it just fine. The only thing I saw wrong was maybe a minor rounding error or two, which wouldn't have affected the end result by much. Where is the "incorrect logic"?

At this point one would question why you think the logic is incorrect. The answer is correct, was expanded to a general purpose XLS spreadsheet and HTML web page, all working correctly. The probability of there being "incorrect logic" generating the right answer at this point is practically Zero; so one of your assumptions must be wrong. As you only have one assumption, incorrect logic, that must be wrong.

Wink

“Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.”
- Sherlock Holmes (by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 1859-1930)

He stated smugly, his perfect cone hat cocked at a jaunty angle.

And - call it a draw with everyone who needs to size a cone getting the win.

There's the professional (precise) answer; there's the capable individual's re-derivation from half-remembered geometry and general problem solving skills; and there's me who's so lazy I'd look it up in my CRC - and miss all the fun.

Whatever works - and so far it's working for the conics I've needed for various designs. Thanks to both Jon and Maurice.
