My wife and I attend two small San Diego area SF cons, and also for the last ten or twelve years have not missed a Comic-Con. For 2010, they've raised the price by more than thirty percent, and since the thing has just become so overwhelmingly huge and crowded (really a trade show now instead of a convention) we probably won't be attending again anytime soon, at least not for the full four days plus preview night. If we decide to go for a day (we're only 40 miles away), and if I can get a Dingbot built by then, I'll be sure to give it to Phil.

I've given some of my own Web-comic-based paper models to other cartoonists there, particularly to Rich Stevens ("diesel sweeties") and Scott Kurtz ("PvP Online") and they've gone over rather well. :-)

Definitely looking forward to your Dingbot's release!

One Final picture, after touch ups... instructions are complete and files forwarded to the professors. I'll upload once Althea (the professors' assistant) arranges to have the files on the Girl Genius site proper.

Enjoy!
Sean

Sean,

Take a look at the Girl Genius site's "to-do" list: Girl Genius Online Comics!

Hehe.. never thought to look there. She confirmed the version with me a few days ago, so I imagine it will appear soon.

Thank you!

Like Yogi, I am an old fart and willing to learn something new.

Educate me: what is a dingbot, and what is steam punk?

I do get the comix concept; I enjoy graphic novels which, I know, are not quite the same. I just don't know the meaning of those words.

A Dingbot is a small "clank," a mechanical robot from that particular Web comic. "Steampunk" is a bit more involved: Steampunk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Never underestimate the power of the willingness to learn! I follow a lot of webcomics (don't let the potential negative connotation fool you, many webcomics are more professional that 'official' syndicated comics, and are unfettered by editorial shortsightedness) and Girl Genius is in a handful I would consider the best. It mixes a great deal of humor, seriousness and progressively brilliant art with grand and theatrical storytelling.

Steampunk is difficult to summarize, so I too recommend a wiki search if you are interested. suffice to say, it is a broad mix of genres. Essentially a futuristic Steam-driven technological Victorian era. Think Jules Verne and HG Wells, set in the Late 1800's.

Bear in mind that "Girl Genius" started out as print, made the successful shift to Web, and has since made another successful shift *back* to print. There was much discussion of this amongst the other Web cartoonists the last couple of Comic-Cons. :-)

Addendum: be sure to check out Foglio's other comic, "Buck Godot: Zap Gun for Hire." That, too, started as print and shifted to Web. Not Steampunk, though, but humorous SF.

Thank you gentlemen. I did use the Wiki resource to learn that I was a fan of steampunk before I ever knew the word! Many of the mainstream visualizations such as WW West and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen have been favorites of mine.

Though not specifically mentioned, Dinotopia might fit into that category, again, one of my favorites.

I have learned.
