I recently bought a copy of Paper Engineering & Pop-ups for Dummies, Rob Ives, Wiley Publishing, Inc., 2009, 250 pages, through Amazon. Rob Ives runs a website, www.flying-pig.co.uk which has several paper automata. I have spent some time looking through the book (definitely a scan and read) and seen that it covers lots of different types of paper crafts including paper mache, pop-ups, scrapbooking items, making 3D objects, building paper models (that’s what we do), and, of course, paper automata. It has tons of pictures and illustrations. I found some interesting info about paper types and composition and was really impressed by the info on making automata work. If you want info on basic model building, stick to the web pages, but if you are interested in how to build “better” models, this has some useful information. I, personally, wouldn’t buy this book for its section on building paper models, but it has lots of great info that could be applied to paper models with some innovative thinking. I don’t think of myself as a dummy, but after harvesting ideas from this book I will admit, I’ve learned lots of neat stuff from this book.
