I've been wanting to build one of these for a while. I just keep collecting info and I need to build one over the winter. Are you going to upload the plans here?

Thanks
Clif

Leif,

It's always *great* to hear from you As you, I'm always fearful that good, solid information will get lost in the void. I think Alan and Madelaine are having the same thoughts! I can see why CHT originally sold the book for $10.00 as it really does pack in a lot of good accurate information.

Thank You Ron...,

Hi Ron,

Thank you for providing this to Papermodelers. It's a valuable reference for those stepping into the vacuum forming process. The information contained is concise and wide ranging taking the beginner from start to finish. Again, thanks!

Best regards,

+Gil

This is way cool. I've wanted one of these since I was a kid, and that was a looooooong time ago.

i built a vac former a few months ago when i needed to make the glass surfaces of navigation lights for my 1/50 scale 'klimek' model. i wanted to make a self contained compact device, not one that i had to attach a vacuum cleaner hose to. i took my inspiration from dental vac forming machines and this is what i got: i used the motor and fan from an old vacuum cleaner and built a 'case' around it from wood. a mesh for the platen, a 250 watt heat lamp and a few other home depot parts completed the project for less than $50. for the form i used carved milliput and used polycarbonate sheet for the clear material. took some trial and error regarding the heating time but in the end i got the parts i wanted. some pictures of the device and the parts are attached.

That self-contained unit is really interesting. Using a heat lamp I've never seen before, or if I have, it hasn't registered until I saw your photos now. - L.

Cool!

Thanks Ron (and Mr. Cross).

I built a similar device back in 1996 (being used here in 2009 for something or other):
