'Vac-Former' Plans
Hi guys
This post is kind of 2 fold in purpose and maybe the mods can better decide where it should go. Primarily... I came across a printed set of plans and a guidebook for the Cross Hobby Tools 'Vac-Former'. This was initially retailed in hobby stores around 1999/2000. Unfortunately the couple that created Cross Hobby Tools are retired however Alan and Madelaine Cross *are* still around right here in Ottawa! Without rambling too much longer I'll get to the meat and 'taters of it all...This is a great booklet. 27 pages of plans, instructions for assembling the pre-cut kits Cross Hobby used to manufacture, vac-forming methods, molds, forming without a vac etc. etc. I managed to get in contact with Alan and Madelaine and asked if they would be OK with my sharing of the booklet/plans with our group here and the initial response was very positive. Madelaine was very interested in seeing what we do here and stated that she didn't have a problem with sharing the plans. I've scanned them in and will be posting them into the downloads section right after I post this. This is the second reason for posting... Along with the plans, I also received a built Cross Vac Former, another unbuilt pre-cut Vac-Former kit still boxed, and probably 40 pounds (or more) of various sheets of styrene? plastic and others. I need to go through it all to see exactly what I have. I'm wondering if anyone here would be interested in the Vac-former kit and all the plastics? If someone was serious about it I would be more than happy to do a good inventory. There is a whack of it! Talk soon! Ron

can you elaborate a bit more. What size is it? looks like separate compartment for different sizes too.
And a few more pictures of the box please. Thanks Isaac

Hi Isaac,
The working area is 8 x 8.5 inches. The plywood sheets are additional 'masks' you can use so that one doesn't waste a whole sheet of plastic or for making multiple parts at the same time. The plastic I have is mostly in 8.5 x 11 inch sheets, 8 x 8.5 inch sheets, some in 17 x 17 inch and even more 16 x 12 inch. As soon as a mod approves the file you can get exact details of the vac-former as it was made to represent the kit. If you still need more pics after this I'd be happy to take some. All the best Ron

First of all, very glad to see you again, Ron!
The Vac-former plans and instructions is a beautiful piece of collected experiences. It is a very good thing to preserve this for others. Without this effort, it would have been lost. Well done. Leif |
