Ship Modelers, where and how do I start?

Hello! I recently bought my first paper ship model kit and am confused about ,just where and how to start! I am very experienced in plastic, resin, and wood, but I have no clue about this project. It is the JSC German Battlecruiser Derrflinger.

I assume that I cut out and build a frame, but the instructions are not clear about the process. Can anyone offer guidance?

Thanks!

Bill

Hello Bill,
Most of the ships are built with the frame first. However, there are a lot modelers that like to build many of the small assemblies first. They tend to bounce around to difference areas as a change of pace. So find your comfort range and have fun with it. Hope to see some images.

Most JSC models have instructions with part numbers grouped into steps. also the parts are usually assembled numerically starting with part number 1.

In each of the part number groupings you may find a reference to a capital letter which refers to a part you must fabricate from wire or round stock.

You may also need to be on the lookout for references to gluing the parts to thicker card, although rare in JSC models.

Not knowing the vintage of your kit to know if it has English instructions, you may find an appropriate translation in the download section of the forum.

Regards and good luck,

Greg

Gentlemen,

Thanks for your quick responses! The instructions are in Polish so it will be a guessing game. I am looking forward to it; it seems a terrific alternative to the very much higher-priced plastic, resin, and wood kits!

Bill

The best advice I can give is to find an existing build thread

Some good places to look are:

WWW.KONRADUS.COM - FORUM KARTONOWE - Dzia?y

Kartonist.de | Portal

Kartonbau.de - Alles rund um Papiermodelle, Kartonmodellbau und Bastelbogen

Good luck

Tim

I would agree with Tim, just start reading the ship build threads. The downloadable Digital Navy HMS Dreadnought is probably a similiar design as Derrflinger. It may be worthwhile having a go at that before trying a pre-printed model.

Derrflinger is a beauty!

Good luck,
russ...

Pay close attention when building the frame to make sure it stays straight. It is easy to get the frame into a banana shape if you do not watch out.
