Tatebanko of the 4th Battle of Kawanakajima, September 1561

The 3 sheet tatebanko depicts a scene from the September 1561 battle of Kawanakajima when Uesugi Kenshin burst into Takeda Shingen's headquarters.
The battles of Kawanakajima were fought in the Sengoku Period of Japan between Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province in the plain of Kawanakajima, in the north of Shinano Province in the mid sixteenth century. There were five battles in all, the fourth culminating in the Uesugi forces reaching the Takeda command post where one of the most famous single combats in Japanese history ensued.
Uesugi Kenshin himself burst into Takeda Shingen's headquarters, attacking Takeda Shingen who, unprepared for such an event, defended himself with his signaling fan.
Takeda Shingen held Kenshin off long enough for one of his retainers, Hara Osumi-no-Kami, to spear Kenshin's mount and drive him off.
The tatebanko shows this famous moment with Kenshin on his horse attacking Takeda Shingen with his sword, Shingen parrying with his fan, and Hara Osumi comming to his rescue.
The Tatebanko is the work of an unknown late 19th c. or early 20th c. artist.
The event has been re enacted in numerous Samurai movies.
Included with the Tatebanko sheets are two woodblock prints of the same subject.
