Here are 3 DC-5 in military service.
USN Silver = an R3D-1, BuNo 1902, c/n 607, of the US Navy assigned to NAS Anacostia in 1940-1941. It was retired in 1946 (and I wish I could find pictures of its later markings). JP = a former KNILM DC-5, registered as PK-ADA, was captured in Andir (now Bandung) where it was being repaired after an encounter with japanese planes. Repainted in japanese colors, it was sent to Tachikawa. It still existed in 1944 and appeared in Tokyo in an exhibit of captured allied equipment. USAAF camo = another former KNILM DC-5 as seen in Australia 1942. Three of them managed to escape to Australia where they served with the USAAF via the Allied Directorate of Air Transport. Former PK-ADD used it construction number (426) as a serial for some time. It was later assigned the radio callsign VHCXC. It survived the war and ended up in the newborn Israeli Air Force in 1948. These are resized recolors of Bruno's DC-5 in 1:300. |
