China got a single MiG-21MF from Egypt (coded 150 red) in 1979 and soon decided to reverse-ingeneer it. Thus was the Chengdu J-7 III born. It entered service as J-7C in 1992. The upgraded J-7 IIIA (later renamed J-7 IV and J-7D) followed soon. They were produced in very limited numbers, around 30 for each variant.
