Barling Bomber Video_The plane almost too big to fly

Barling Bomber & Air Speed Record - US Army Air Corps - Part 3 - 1924 - YouTube
Barling bomber starts at about 2:01.
The Barling was stranded in the Mid West as it was incapable of gaining enough altitude to fly over West Virginia.

More pictures and plans and history of Barling Bomber:

Any designer up to the challenge of making a 1/48 model of it?

Never heard of the plane until today. Interesting story and history. With six engines and 2 1/2 wings, it would be a complex model to design and build, that's for sure.

Interesting flick. I knew one of the people in it. Les Maitland, the first to fly non-stop to Hawaii. He was a Episcopal Minister in later years and lived in Red Bluff, and was good friends with my father-in-law and attended my wedding.

He was also noted for being in charge of low level bombing in Europe during WWII, very interesting guy.

This blurb was amusing: "...shipped to Wright field in sections..."
John, you find some very interesting stuff on the web.

Good footage of a lot of U.S. aviation history, John. And very appropriate since the 67th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Air Force was two days ago.

Many thanks for sharing this.

Interesting that the limiting factor that kept the Barling Bomber from entering service was that it couldn't fly over the Appalachian Mountains in spite of those six Liberty engines.

I am sure the Barling Bomber was the deterrent that kept Canada from going to war with the US. Maybe the Canadians were terrified by the prospect of the flat empty places of Ontario Province being bombed by the Barling, or maybe they were paralyzed with laughter.

I think this would be a great paper model, the Air Force Museum in Fairborn, Ohio has a cabinet full of recognition type models including one of the Barling. It dwarfs all its near contemporaries including the WWI German medium bombers. The wheels from the Barling are on display in the main hall.

The only thing holding me back is I can't find a clear picture of what the engine nacelles looked like.

I found a few sites with pictures that might help. I get the impression the nacelle sides are flat with louvres, the front fared with 2 compound curves, and the back seems to have been open.

If you make the model can you also make a flapper and a flivver to go with it as in these pictures:

Lots of photos and a simple set of plan views at thie Russian site

This is best view of under middle wing nacelles I was able to find:

You can see shadows cast by one wall of the nacelle on the inner side of the inboard wall of the nacelle, and a lot of complex drag causing struts and rigging, small fuel tanks above the engine and small nacelles above the middle wing.

Good side view show un aerodynamic bulge of mid part of nacelles, behind flat front sides with louvres, and odd shaped faring of the machine gun nest in the box of the tubular hull.

The Barling Bomber

Looks like only outboard nacelles had a bulge.

Dear Friends:
A tail dragger with a nose wheel? What kind of belt and suspender mentality was this?
Wow,
Miles
Was the liberty engines use by boot leggers in the rum runner boats?
