Perhaps ironically, I watched the clip of the Kettering Aerial Torpedo's repeated crashes hours after learning of the latest Falcon 9 attempt to land on a barge, and Elon Musk's wry comment:
"Well, at least the pieces were bigger this time!" I couldn't help but wonder if the Kettering Aerial Torpedo test crew shared similar thoughts. But today's UAVs are all descendants of this humble "Bug". "If at first you don't succeed..." proved true with the Kettering and its offspring, and it's still valid in the Space Age. Perhaps one day when rocket landings become routine, old SpaceX clips of their early tests will generate the same mixture of amusement, admiration and inspiration as this ancient U.S. Army footage.
