Very interesting John.

One tends to think they did not have this sort of technology back then!

Cool My first hand view

As a frequent visitor to the Dayton AF museum, here is a picture I snapped of this plane.

Early attempt in delivering ordnance over a long distance without the heavy metal needed from a conventional cannon or a ship.

The technology really did not allow for anything close to precision. But at that early stage, they were happy if it even went over the horizon in the general direction desired.

But radio was already available in 1919, so could they control the uav's direction?

To hit a distant target you must control more than just a direction. Radio, could barely do a direction.

World's first cruise missile... predated the V-1 "buzz bomb" by nearly a quarter century...

Radio control might be theoretically possible, but easily subject to jamming...

Watching that video, I get the idea they were happy if it even left the ground.

I got the same impression.

The use of an under-powered rail launch system contributed to the crashes on launch. They should have just catapulted it to the air.

Oh well, I am sure it was just as much fun crashing the drone as it was to see it fly!
