My Build

I built this with 11" x 17" laser prints glued to extra-strong black foamcore. The hinges on the facade are bits of scrap leather, as is the pulley belt. I used two wine corks for the pulleys. The crank is made from two laminated ice cream sticks and some thick bamboo skewers. I put two tabs of leather under the roof as an ad-hoc solution to keep the facade from closing while you turn the crank. All this stuff (apart from the printouts) came from S.C.R.A.P., Portland's art supply thrift store.

I doubled up all the people by making mirror images and folding them over. The ladies with their backs to us actually have corresponding naked fronts and those exposing themselves to us have corresponding backs. You would have to examine the room with a dental mirror to see that detail... but I know it's there!

There was a LOT of jiggery-pokery required to get everything to fit properly and to get it working. I was glad I decided to use foamcore, the thickness of which hides many of the designer's errors. I had to take a big chunk out of the the wall between the seated couple and the stairwell where Madame stands, otherwise the men climbing the stairs would bonk their noggins going up. Even after doing that, I had to cut off the feet of a couple fellows who were still too tall.

I glued the men onto the pulley belt just by their front feet with Marine Goop glue -- just about the strongest and most flexible stuff I know. As the men go around the pulleys, their back foot lifts off and then returns as the belt goes flat again.

I worried the whole time I built the mechanism because I knew being imprecise could mess it up. Ultimately the pulleys came out a tiny bit wonky as a result of drilling the holes from both sides with a Dremel tool and then enlarging them. What the hell; it works.

Nice, clever detail by the designer: When the facade is open it hides the men coming up from the box below, and the women with their open capes partly hide the men as they go back under. It's not a perfect illusion, but it's pretty darn good.

Total build time: three afternoons.

That turned out pretty good. Nice music, too.

It's "A Travers les Barreaux de L'escalier" ("Through the Bars of the Staircase") by Mistinguett. I thought it was appropriate...

Outstanding build. Do you have any photos of the construction?

No, the build was so on-the-fly, seat-of-my-pants, what-the-hell-do-I-do-now that I didn't want to set up a camera and document it. It was tough enough to build without adding another layer! I would have been documenting a lot of mistakes and blind alleys.

Excellent build mate. Well done, and welcome to the forum by the way.

My attention was diverted elsewhere and I never did develop this further, but it still sits on the kitchen windowsill where the occasional visitor will pick it up and give a blushing smile.

Keep on snippin' ... Johnny.

Given that "It's no wonder truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense", it would be interesting to know if an actual building's facade was decorated like that.
