1916 German Submarine
I saw in the dirigible thread that Mike liked submarines and it reminded me I have these two sheets for the German submarine "Deutschland." Unusually, it was commissioned privately and later commandeered for WWI. It's first voyage was to carry merchandise to the USA (hence the American flags in the model).
This is from the Wikipedia entry, "Deutschland departed on her first voyage to the US on 23 June 1916 commanded by Paul König, formerly of the North German Lloyd company. She carried 750 tons of cargo in total, including 125 tons of highly sought-after chemical dyes, mainly Anthraquinone and Alizarine derivatives in highly concentrated form,[4] some of which were worth as much as $1,254 a pound in 2005 money. She also carried medical drugs, mainly Salvarsan, gemstones, and mail, her cargo being worth $1.5 million in total." German submarine Deutschland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Again, PM me if you'd like higher rez versions of the scans. |

Just great. This sub was originally built and used for trade. It went to the US one time, breaking the british blocade on Germany in WW1. Wow. I sometimes wonder how such treasures survive. Nice that u posted it here.

1916 German Submarine 'Deutschland'
Thanks, Bob,
for the vintage 'DEUTSCHLAND' sub model! That is a fine hand-drawn model, and the sheets are actually quite good, if you enlarge and download them onto your desktop. (They can also easily be color-corrected in Photoshop CS). It is a fascinating historical record at Wikipedia, if you read about the two long voyages of the submarine on the Atlantic back in 1916, during WW I. However, if you have larger still scans, I would of course also appreciate if you could send them to me, when you have the time. I'll PM you my e-mail address. Thank you! All the best, Bengt in Stockholm |

One question though, why is there also a Dutch (or French) flag on it?

I'm glad to see this model of Deutschland. I recall several discussions of that ship in this Forum, especially by Bill Geoghegan (DrBill), a formerly active member who now is associated with a maritime museum on the Maryland Eastern Shore. Bill and I grew up together in Baltimore in the 1940s and 50s and continue to have an interest in Baltimore maritime history. All of those previous posts and threads seem to have disappeared (at least I cannot find them).
The Maryland Historical Society (Maryland Historical Society | Museum and Library | Baltimore, MD) holds images of Deutschland's visit. I have been unable to access the site today, but here are the finding aids of the Society related to Deutschland: Search | Maryland Historical Society And here are other images and accounts of the ship: B&CSC and the German Society of Maryland Gather to Remember Maritime Pioneer Capt.
