Hi All,

And hi, elliott, and many thanks for all your encouraging comments, past and present.

And hi, MichaelS. The link below describes the Hartmann Cross. This model cross is often described as the oldest known published paper model extant.

https://tektonten.blogspot.com/2010/...ard-model.html

I'm also attaching a small copy of the cross from the collection of friend and fellow member Tom Greensfelder. The original was printed from a woodcut, and it is remarkable that the image has survived. Thanks, Tom.

Score and fold,

Thumb Dog

Hi All,

Quick correction. I skimmed the tektonten thread too quickly and referred to the Hartmann Cross as being a woodcut. It was (and remains) an intaglio engraving, most likely printed from a copper plate.

Too quick on the draw here at chez Thumb Dog.

Score and fold,

Wow TD. Thanx for that. After I posted that I realized I really should have Googled it. But you were right there. So it was probably done with one of those big ink coated rollers going over the copper plate? Quite ingenious that it also serves as a sundial.

Hi All,

Thanks, whulsey. I was happy to find so many old models that portrayed the more peaceful side of the Great War. I wasn't too interested in paper soldiers before I began the project, but now that I have had well over a hundred of the wee Lilliputians under the knife, I've developed a newfound respect for them.

Padraig,

My copy of Joseph Phelan's book is titled "Heroes and Airplanes of World War I", published by Grosset and Dunlap, 1966. Does this help ?

Padraig,

Ooops, correction to my previous post, the correct title is "Heroes and Airplanes of The Great War, 1914-1918"

Ann, with your interest in the American Civil War, you may have found these already, but here if you haven't seen them, these may interest you. I found these soldiers at:

https://www.civilwaracademy.com/civil-war-uniform

Not any action poses to speak of, but well drawn and apparently accurate.

I brightened up the images before I sent them, the originals are available at the link above.

For ACW, maybe this works, http://daildeca.cz/ilustrace/36kubela/04abc3/50.jpg
