Rigby Hawker Hurricane
I finally recolored and assembled a companion for the Rigby P-66 that I built earlier. Rigby P-66 WSAM
This time it's a Hawker Hurricane. The model was originally published in the "Sunday Funnies" in newspapers across the nation on December 29, 1940. The scanned image I worked from was poorly registered, and garishly colored, so a repaint was called for. I used the inaccurate camouflage pattern from the original kit, but selected colors that were closer to reality. I downloaded new roundels from the internet, and personalized the fuselage markings with my initials and my birth date. I christened the plane with my wife's name (earning some brownie points in the process). I also changed the location of the tail flash which was incorrectly placed on the original model. The kit canopy was unusable, so I borrowed one from a Marek Hurricane kit that I bought years ago, and resized it's height and width to fit the Rigby. This is a tab and slot model, but I "cheated" when forming the fuselage, and used internal glue tabs instead. The wings were attached with tabs 'n slots as Mr Rigby intended. It looks pretty good for a 78 year old hand drawn kit containing only 10 parts, and certainly came out better than I expected. After taking the last photo, I realized I forgot the radio antenna, so right after I hit "submit new thread", I'll go back and finish the model. Enjoy the pics!

Great work Don. Did not know Bruno was old enough to be doing S&P's in the 40'!

It is magnificent, it looks beautiful and perfect. Impressive work. And knowing that it was designed so long ago and without the help of today's technology is incredible.

As the Flyboy said: Wow!
That has to be the best build of a Rigby that I have ever seen. Don (too) |

Thanks for the raves, fellas. It was a fun build. For all I know, my dad might have built this one back in 1940 - he would have been almost 14 and was very interested in airplanes.

Considering the age of the model, the technology back then, the designing tools (rulers and French curves), and the documentation, the model look outstanding!
Thank you Don. ps: and the builder care! |

Hi All,
And hi, rockpaperscissor. Terrific build of the real workhorse of the Battle of Britain. Eight Browning .303s put a lot of lead in the air, and if they did go down, chances were that they were recoverable due to fighting with a home-field advantage. Solid colors and a solid build. Now build 14,582 more... Score and fold, Thumb Dog |

Rick just gave me a thumbs up, so I'll upload them tomorrow: The P-66 in 2 liveries (American and Chinese), and the personalized Hurricane.
