Hi Everyone!
I've been building paper models since I was a kid. Mostly Sci-Fi stuff, but I went and designed my own, often from book covers and artwork (Chris Foss comes to mind). Mind you, this was waaay before the days of Pepakura and 3D modeling software; just rulers, protractors and whatever math/geometry I remembered from school.
Just got back into it a few years ago when I built some gaming layouts for a group of kids at a nearby library, so I was blown away by how sophisticated things have become. This site is definitely something I have to check out often. Cheers, Matt |

welcome to the forum matt like you I build card models long ago in fact they were more school projects back in the 1970's where my mum would find some photo in a book to base some project on that we were doing and help us build that viking ship settlement are what ever else. Its now I wish i had some photo of them builds so long ago done with crayons and a ruler and pencil.

Welcome, Matt! The design process has automated some of your hand work, but cheap and accurate home color printers have really made this come alive for me.

Hi again,
@doctormax: I wish I had pics of what I did then myself; some of the things I built were fairly crude, but the geometry was very interesting. One of my proudest achievements was a build of this spaceship: My colors were a bit different, but the geometry was really close (at least to a 12 year-old). All lost now to the inevitable maternal cleanup instincts. Wish I'd known then... @Retired: I heartily agree. And with things like Craft Robo and Silhouette SD it takes even some of the tedium away. Although I wonder what will happen to the craft when 3D printing becomes readily available... Thanks everyone, I'll be seeing you around. Matt |

Welcome aboard!
Hi, Matt. I have only discovered paper modeling (have been a plastic guy forever...) but I too was amazed (still am amazed on a regular basis...) by the wonderful 'universe' this forum community has exposed me to since I started. I have little time to apply to modeling right now, but I am keeping my 'eyes' in the game and do what I can when I can. It helps this bunch is so generally friendly and helpful. Many forums have different 'cultures', and this one is one of the most courteous I have run into. In short, lots of good folks who enjoy their hobby. Hope your experience is just as wonderful as mine.

Matt, don't think 3-D printing will "hurt" card modelling as much as the other materials.
Card's greatest strength is low cost (2-D printers likely to remain much cheaper without the extra dimension) and superb graphics. Would add a whole 'nother level of complexity to get a 3-D printer to do the colors ... Yogi |
