Hi from Peterborough UK
Hi folks
My name is Graham and I have been building plastic models for many years. I was recently introduced to card/paper modelling by a fellow forum member on a plastic modellers forum. Intrigued, I did a bit of searching the Internet and became a bit hooked on the idea. However, I have yet to build my first model. I have a fairly simple (I hope!) 1/24 fork lift truck kit, mainly straight lines apart from the wheels, to learn the techniques. I have also got the 1/400 HMS Belfast for when I feel a bit more confident. I was really happy to find this forum and I look forward to admiring all your work while I despair at mine |

Hi Graham,
Welcome to the forum. Thanks for joining. If you don't mind a suggestion - it's best to start off with relatively simple downloadable models like the animal models at Canon's site Paper Craft - Canon Creative Park or the free models at ecardmodels.com or even here on the forum. The advantage to downloadable models is that if (when) you make a mistake you just print off another copy; you haven't ruined the kit that you paid for. While plastic and paper/card modeling do share some things in common the medium is different and takes some getting used to. Anyhow, that's enough from me. We're glad you're here. Welcome aboard!

Welcome. I echo Elliott's suggestions to practice on the free models out there.
If you like ships, Mauther's blog is divided into categories, and there are 269 ship/boat posts there, PAPERMAU: boat. Paper models generally fall into two types: rectilinear or organic. Your forklift and many buildings fall into the first category. Birds, other animals, ships and aircraft are part of the second. Boxy and curvy. What I found to be the best way to learn how to handle curvy was the little one-page animal models from Canon. And they are cute little models that you can give away while you are learning technique

Thanks guys.
I don't intend starting the Belfast until I become more confident/proficient. I have found the Canon site so I will be taking your advice on downloading a few fun practice models. Thanks for the link to the ships blog, I shall be studying that one. |
