usually, unless its an airliner. In that case, it would be gloss coat. If you do anything with a canopy though, do not spray that.

I haven't done it myself, as I paint most of my models, but I have a ship model gathering dust that I wish I'd applied some sort of coating to, to make it easier to remove said dust.

Just make sure if you're going to apply a protective coating that you use one that is acid free (most sprays designed for coating photos are acid free), so it doesn't leech the ink from your model.
