Hi everyone!
Hi, I really admire the passion people on here seem to have for their craft.
I was just wondering what sort of stuff I would need to get started building paper models (in a kind of cheap, hacky way if necessary). I found my way here looking for information on the SS Canberra and I am very excited about the prospect of building a version of her myself. Thanks! |

I like the following to recommend for beginning supplies. Plenty of lively debate coming, so strap in boys n' girls.
Cutting board Steel ruler (6" or 15cm ish is a good start) Bone knife (as is found in sewing supplies for curving, scoring, creasing) Xacto Knife, with lots of blades ... you should be replacing several during your build Elmer's white glue and fast drying super glue tooth picks to apply and smooth glue' Card stock or board to laminate supports and inner structure and ... paper.

Welcome to this wonderful hobby. This is my toolkit, and with 8 years of modeling, you add brushes, sticks, needles and any cylindrical tool to bend the paper. To start is more than enough.

Dear Jonny:
the hardest thing to find is a scoring device. Dear ink pin is good only if you are beyond sure it is out of ink. Enjoy, Miles

Welcome and enjoy.
You really need very itttle to make models. Remember you are going to cut score and glue. You should have basic tools to do this already knocking around. Cutting - scissors, craft knife scalpel. Steel ruler for straight edges, cuts, scoring. Blunt knife, sharp point for scoring etc. Start simple and you will soon end up with tools that work for you and "feel right".
