Hello from (former) Paper Creek Model Works

Hi,
I'm the former creator, owner, operator of Paper Creek Model Works. I have taken a break from that business for the last few years because, as they say, the best way to kill a hobby is to make it your business! But now I'm just having fun designing and building new models. I guess the bug has hit me again and let's see where it takes me this time. Thanks for this valuable resource and I'm enjoying seeing the extremely talented modelers gathered here.

Welcome! Yep, a hobby can get mired when you can't have any fun with it. Deadlines, running a business, etc. is one reason I just give mine away. The thanks and appreciation is what keeps me going. So what if I work on a project on and off for sometimes years on end. It can get to ya which is why I take a lot of breaks then work feaverishly when the bug bites me again.

I used to see your models when I visited the Whistle Stop in Pasadena. They were the finest paper model buildings I have ever seen and I've been building paper models for well over 40 years. I always wanted to build one but unfortunately I always had other projects that I wanted to build. Are you still going to make them available?

Paper Creek Model Works produced some of the finest model railroad building kits in ANY medium, and their gorgeous sheets of printed shingles are still keenly missed. I'm glad to learn that you are happily designing and building again, and I'm sure many other paper model designers and publishers would be interested in your insights on the commercial side of this hobby. I would assume that ensuring the perfect registration of your precision diecutting must have been a major headache, or were there other issues during your Paper Creek run?

From me too, a warm welcome back. I have only seen some
of your models in your ads and the nice giveaway from you,
the outhouse. Outstanding work. I hope, you will share some
of your modelling skills with us. It´s fine to see old wooden
western buildings in paper. They work great as individual
models. One don´t have to build a complete model pike to
get the feeling of the old west. This kind of models do the
trick alone.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I really had a blast creating models for Paper Creek, and I would have loved to create more. There were many on the drawing board in different stages of development. I was fortunate enough to work with some excellent laser cutters that could register even the finest detail all the way down to Z scale (1/220). The problem came after the business took off. I was so busy with the production, taking orders, and shipping, that I no longer had time to do the fun part- designing models!
I'm now researching a different business model based on the great work that companies like Clever Models and ECardModels have done. I want to offer my building kits and texture sheets of bricks, tarpaper etc. as a download only to be printed by the customer. This would mean the buildings would not be laser cut and the shingles would not be possible. But I also want to expand into other areas such as super detailed WW1 airplanes and early cars, trains, etc. that would feature realistic weathered textures.

If there is interest out there in downloadable PDF versions of my old and new kits please let me know. Any feedback and thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi George,

I can only say: move on! I´d be especially interested
in your building kits and, I think they will be of the same quality,
in rolling stock. There are many friends of dioramas out there,
which don´t need working trains. Card models of some cars
and i.e. some first generation diesels would be appreciated.

I would also like to see your kits available again and a .pdf download is a great idea. Excellent products. I have a few of your O scale outhouses and they were easy to download and print. I also purchased some texture sheets from a hobby shop, but they were not well displayed or promoted. Good luck, I would like to see more in O scale!
